In short
Conversion is the moment you turn away from sin and give your life to Jesus Christ. It is a choice you make yourself, not something that simply happens to you.
Conversion is the point where you stop going your own way and turn to God. The Bible uses the word for a complete change of direction, not a small adjustment. You admit that you have sinned, you ask Jesus Christ to forgive you, and you hand Him the running of your life.
It is your choice to make
God has already done His part. He sent Jesus to the earth, let Him die on a cross for our sins, and raised Him from the dead on the third day. That work is finished. What is left is your answer. Scripture never tells you to wait until conversion happens to you, it tells you to turn, as an instruction to someone who can decide.
What conversion is not
It is not becoming a better version of yourself. God saves people, He does not merely improve them.
It is not going to church. Attending a service is good, but it saves no one.
It is not a feeling that comes over you. Feelings may follow, but the choice comes first.
What happens next
After you turn to Him, God does something you cannot do for yourself. He gives you a new heart and a new desire to live His way. Scripture calls that being born again. As 1 John 1:9 puts it, if we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive.
