The basics

What is sin?

In short

Sin is everything you think, say or do that goes against God’s will. It is what separates every person from God, and it is the reason Jesus had to die.

Sin is anything in your thinking, speaking or doing that goes against God’s will. It covers the obvious things and the quiet ones: pride, dishonesty, bitterness, using people, going your own way.

Why Scripture uses that word

Many people prefer softer words: mistakes, brokenness, choices that did not work out. Those words feel kinder, but they hide the problem. If the trouble were only brokenness, Jesus would not have had to die. He died for sin.

It affects everyone

Romans 3:23 states it plainly: all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. That includes decent, kind, hard-working people. Sin is not about being worse than your neighbour, it is about being separated from God.

What God did about it

God did not leave it there. Jesus Christ took the punishment for sin on the cross and rose from the dead three days later. Forgiveness is offered to anyone who turns from sin and puts their faith in Him.
